When you are researching international medical coverage, the common google search is “Travel Medical Insurance.” The results will show dozens of options out there competing for your business, but it is important to know what a “travel medical policy” is vs an “international comprehensive medical insurance policy.” While we do offer both types of coverage, it is never our recommendation to take the travel medical policy if there is the option for international comprehensive medical insurance, and here is why.
Travel medical plans are not registered as health Insurance policies like hospitals and doctors accept. They are labeled “travel policies” because they are sold via surplus lines, which are sold through third party underwriters by travel agents and insurance brokers like us. What that means in simple terms is a third party is involved on the insurance side, therefore creating additional issues.
Trust us when we say, you get what you pay for. One of the biggest concerns to point out is that the majority of these travel medical plans will exclude high-risk activities like motocross, exclude ambulance services related to racing and riding, have gaps in their coverage when you need it most, benefit caps at $1,000,000 USD, and the claims are typically a reimbursement set up and an overall nightmare.
International comprehensive medical insurance, on the other hand, is simply comprehensive medical insurance. These plans are registered as health/medical insurance plans and they are the type of insurance plans hospitals and doctors typically accept. By having a trusted comprehensive insurance plan you can also have confidence that you will get the best care anywhere in the world. In addition to that, these plans are guaranteed renewable. What that means is once you are medically approved after submitting an application, you can keep this coverage in force without concern that if your health status changes in the future, it will not be a factor for any ongoing care. Additionally, the international comprehensive plans we offer will not have gaps in coverage, exclusions against riding and racing, exclusions against ambulance services and benefit options up to $10,000,000 USD just to name a few.
To wrap this up, international comprehensive insurance is hands down the best protection. If you have additional questions or concerns please reach out to us and we can give you a free insurance review.
